PDF to Word
Turn a PDF into an editable .docx you can open in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. The conversion runs in your browser, so the document never leaves your device.
How to convert a PDF to Word
- Choose your PDF. The conversion starts by itself — there is no button to press.
- Choose whether to keep the page breaks or let the text run continuously.
- Save the .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice to edit it.
About converting PDF to Word
It is worth knowing what a PDF actually contains, because it explains both what this tool can do and what no browser-based tool can. A PDF does not store paragraphs. It stores instructions to place particular glyphs at particular coordinates. The paragraph you see is something your eye assembles, not something written in the file.
Converting to Word therefore means inferring the structure back. This tool reads the position, size and font of every piece of text, groups them into lines by their baseline, joins lines into paragraphs by the spacing between them, rejoins words broken across a line, and treats text noticeably larger than the body size as a heading. The result is a real .docx with genuine paragraphs, headings, bold and italic — a document you can edit, not a picture of one.
Where it is weaker is complex layout. Multi-column pages, nested tables and text wrapped around figures are reconstructed approximately, because the original file does not record that they were a table or a column in the first place. For the common cases — reports, letters, articles, contracts — the output is close and quick to tidy up.
One limit is absolute, and no tool that keeps your file on your device can avoid it: a scanned PDF contains no text at all, only a photograph of text. Extracting words from it requires OCR, which in every free online converter means uploading your document to a server. This tool will tell you when a PDF is a scan rather than quietly producing an empty file.
Questions about PDF to Word
Is the Word file really editable?
Yes. You get a genuine .docx with paragraphs, headings and character formatting, not a picture of the page embedded in a document. Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice all open it and you can edit every word.
Why is my converted document empty?
Because the PDF is a scan: it holds images of pages rather than text. Reading those words requires OCR, and doing OCR online means uploading your file. This tool tells you when that is the case instead of handing you a blank document.
Will the layout look exactly like the PDF?
Close, not identical. Paragraphs, headings, bold, italic and font sizes come across well. Multi-column layouts, complex tables and text flowing around images are approximated, because the PDF never recorded them as such.
Are images from the PDF included?
Not yet — the conversion covers text and its formatting. Pictures need to be lifted out separately, which the PDF to JPG tool does.
Does it work with Google Docs and LibreOffice?
Yes. The .docx is a standard Office Open XML file, so anything that opens Word documents opens it, including Google Docs, LibreOffice, Pages and the mobile Word apps.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Your browser reads the PDF and writes the .docx on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, which matters for exactly the documents people convert most: contracts, statements, applications and reports.
