PDF to text
Pull the words out of a PDF as a plain text file — rejoined into paragraphs for reading, or line by line for data.
How to extract text from a PDF
- Choose your PDF. It starts reading immediately — there is nothing to press.
- Pick whether wrapped lines should be rejoined into paragraphs, or kept exactly as they fall.
- Save the .txt and open it anywhere — it is plain UTF-8 text.
Two different jobs called the same thing
"Get the text out" hides two tasks that want opposite treatment. If you are going to read the result, or paste it somewhere, you want the lines that the page happened to wrap rejoined back into sentences. If you are pulling a table or a list of codes, those line breaks *are* the structure and joining them destroys it.
So both are offered rather than guessed at. Rejoining uses the spacing between lines to decide where a paragraph really ends, and heals words that were hyphenated across a line break. Keeping lines gives you the page exactly as laid out, one line per line.
The text comes from the PDF's own text layer, so it is the words the document actually contains, not a guess from a picture. That also means a scanned PDF contains no text to extract — it holds photographs of text. The tool says so rather than handing you an empty file.
Output is plain UTF-8, which every editor, spreadsheet and script reads without ceremony. No formatting survives, by definition: if you want headings and bold, use PDF to Word instead.
Questions about extracting text
Why is my file empty?
Because the PDF is a scan: it holds images of pages rather than text. Reading those words needs OCR, and doing OCR online means uploading your document. The tool tells you that instead of handing you a blank file.
Should I rejoin the lines or keep them?
Rejoin for anything you will read or paste as prose — reports, letters, articles. Keep the lines for tables, code, addresses or lists, where the line breaks carry meaning that joining would destroy.
Does the formatting come across?
No, and that is what plain text means. Bold, headings, columns and tables all flatten to words. If you need the formatting, PDF to Word keeps paragraphs, headings and character styles.
Why is a multi-column page jumbled?
A PDF does not record that something was a column, so text is read in the order it was placed in the file, which in a two-column layout often means crossing between columns. Keeping the lines rather than rejoining them usually makes it easier to sort out by hand.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Your browser reads the PDF and writes the .txt on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
